The Divine Milieu
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1960) 160pages US$12.50 C$18.50This little book does no more than recapitulate the eternal lesson of the Church in the words of a man who, because he feels himself to feel deeply in tune with his own times, has sought to teach how to see God everywhere, to see him in all that is most hidden, most solid, and most ultimate in the world. These pages put forward no more than a practical attitude - or, more exactly perhaps, a way of teaching how to see. - from the author's Introduction (Harper Perennial)
The Gnostic Gospels
Elaine Pagels (1979) 182pages US$11 C$14.95In 1945 an Egyptian peasant unearthed what proved to be the Gnostic Gospels, the sacred book of one of the earliest Christian sects. This landmark study, a winner of both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, draws on these texts to illuminate the world of the first Christians and to examine different ways in which both Gnostics and the orthodox constructed God, Christ, and the Church. Did Jesus literally rise from the dead? Was there only one God, and could he be both Father and Mother? Whose version of Christianity came down to us and why did it prevail? Brilliant, provocative, and stunning in its implications, The Gnostic Gospels is a radical yet accessible reconsideration of the origins of the Christian faith. (Vintage, 1989)
Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen
24 Illuminations & Text by Hildegaard of Bingen w/ commentary by Matthew Fox (1985) 128 pages US$18.95 C$28.75Hildegaard's teaching forced people to "wake up," take responsibility, make choices. Prophets "illuminate the darkness," she tells us. They are the people who can say, "God has illuminated me in both my eyes. By them I behold the splendor of light in the darkness. Through them I can choose the path I am to travel., whether I wish to be sighted or blind by recognizing what guide to call upon by day or by night." - from Matthew Fox's introductory chapter (Bear & Co.)
The Little Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi
Ugolino di Monte Santa Maria (14th C.) Edited and Adapted from a Translation by W.Heywood(1906) 120pages US$10 C$14.95"In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ the Crucified, and of His Mother the Virgin Mary. In this book are contained certain Little Flowers, miracles and devout examples of the glorious mendicant of Christ, St. Francis, and of certain of his Holy Companions, to the praise of Jesus Christ. Amen" St. Francis of Assisi's ecstatic embrace of a life of poverty revolutionized Christianity even as it transformed the ethics of the West. In this luminous, lively book, St. Francis's followers preserved his legend and those of his first disciples, combining stories of miracles with convincing - and often slyly humorous - portraits of men who were no less human for having been touched by God. (Vintage, 1998)
Original Blessing: A Primer in Creation Spirituality Presented in Four Paths, Twenty-Six Themes and Two Questions
Matthew Fox (1983) 356pages US$15 C$24In the introduction to this book-which I hope is more a journey for the reader than a book- I wish to pose two questions: 1. In our quest for wisdom and survival, does the human race require a new religious paradigm? 2. Does the creation-centered spiritual tradition offer such a paradigm? This is less a book than a program between the covers of a book. Spirituality is a journey, an in-depth journey, one that in Rabbi Heschel's words touches our "recesses," both personal and social. Therefore this book/program names the four paths on that journey (namely via positiva, via negativa, via creativa, via transformativa). Since this is a primer, an introductory book, each theme is an unfinished meditation that is only briefly sketched out. I trust the reader to make connections and applications and to carry on the theological revisioning that must follow from this new (but ancient) vision. I wish the readers and livers of this primer much wisdom, much spiritual journey, and much making of erotic justice. And may we meet someday in our ever deeper and deeper journeys. - from the author's Introduction (Bear & Co.)
The Secret of Francis of Assisi: A Meditation
Christian Bobin (1992) Translated by Michael H. Kohn (1997) 102pages US$12 C$17.95How did we come torevere this thriteeth-century Italian merchant's son as a saint? This penetrating meditation provides what may be the best answer yet, by gently but sure-handedly cutting through every pious legend to discover what is timeless and universally true about Saint Francis. (Shambhala, 1999)
