An immortal stone took its appointed place
since the creation of the world,
atop the Flower-Fruit Mountain
in a country named Ao-lai,
surrounded by a great ocean-beyond-the-ocean,
Seeded by Heaven and Earth,
and favoured with the vigour of Sunshine
and the grace of MoonLight;
the stone became magically pregnant
till it split open one day,
giving birth to a stone egg
as big as a playing ball.
Fully exposed to the elements
and endlessly fructified by the wind,
the egg transformed in no-time into
the Stone Monkey wholly endowed
with every vital organs and nimble limbs.
Upon the very first breath,
the Stone Monkey learned to climb and run.
Mindful in bowing to each of the four quarters,
the Stone Monkey's steely eyes beamed
two shafts of golden light
far-reaching the Palace of the Polestar.
The light startled the Celestial Jade Emperor,
and disturbed his fairy ministers, all gathered
in the Cloud Palace of the Golden Gates,
at the Treasure Hall of the Holy Mists.
The Jade emperor then solemnly declared,
"These creatures in the world below
are compounded of the essences of Heaven and Earth,
so nothing that goes on there should ever surprise us."
